Meet our March Mom of the Month-Kelsi Van Fleet!

Tell us about yourself and your family. - First, my husband, Jake, and I have a wonderful kid named Hudson and he is truly the love of our lives! He is 9 month old!! - Second, Jake, and I have been together for 10+ years! We are high school sweethearts! We both went to the University of Texas and he now is a family resident at Harrison and I’m the CFO of a small oil and gas company in Texas. I was Texas bred, but Jake lived his first year and a half in Bremerton (hence why we are here) and was delivered by one of the resident physicians - the almost of 6 degrees of separation we have encountered is unreal! - Third, we have two fur kids. Tank is a 12 year old, yorkie! Piper is a 4 year old, tabby cat! They have been so amazing with Hudson!!

What surprised you the most once you became a mom? Sleep. I didn’t know I wouldn’t miss/need it as much as I thought I would. I have always been a lover of sleep and naps, but I have surprisingly been ok without it!

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it? I joined Fit4Mom to gain my confidence back in my strength and body. Pregnancy takes a toll on your body and after birth you need all the strength you can get. I wanted a place that I could take along my baby and get a good workout; Fit4Mom has been so much more than that. I never imagined making so many mom bonds and learning so much for each one of them. I’ve also learned so much about my pelvic floor that I wouldn’t have never thought possible! I’m so grateful for Fit4Mom!!

What would you tell someone thinking about joining? Just do it! It may be scary but so is motherhood and we all need a friend! And trust me, you will find your friend mom without the awkward “mom dating”

What is your favorite exercise at class? I am a huge fan of squats. Though that is why Hudson loves being “rocked” in a squatting position...so not sure it is for everyone!

Any words of wisdom for other moms? You are amazing and doing a great job! Even on your worst day, that kid loves you more than you know and will make you smile!

What is your favorite go to piece of baby/kid gear? Baby carrier!! It has been a life saver at the grocery store, shopping, airport, Fit4Mom and even hiking!! I don’t travel without it!

What are your 3 favorite things? Tex-Mex, Wine, Chocolate milkshakes (I might have a food/drink problem)

If you could turn a "mom" activity into an Olympic Sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for? Rubbing lotion on a baby....drum roll without crying!!! He used to cry all the time but he has such sensitive skin! Now mom and son are both happy!

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us! I love sweets (not surprising), but I’ve eaten a 3 pound bag of life saver mints in one night and a different night a whole bag of smarties. My parent were in on my addiction too - before every soccer game I had a large ice water from Sonic and sour punch straws from the connivence store. I still love some candy!

82397749_598342807652057_1297458260902674432_n.jpg

Tell us about yourself and your family: My family includes me, my husband keith, 1.5 year old daughter Isla, baby girl on the way and our yellow lab Maci. Keith and I both grew up in WA and started dating in college at WSU. After college he joined the navy and was stationed here. We then moved to Hawaii for a few years and now are back!

What surprised you the most about becoming a mom? What surprised me most about becoming a mom was how lonely it was! Most of my friends didn’t have kids yet and were working full time so I found myself getting bored and lonely often.

Why did you join FIT4MOM Kitsap? Why do you love it? I joined fit4mom as a way to make friends in similar stages of life as I was. I love it because it gives me that sense of community that I feel like I’ve been missing since taking time off from teaching.

What would you tell someone about joining? I would tell someone who was thinking about joining to go for it! It’s a good way to make friends and you know that you always have something to get out of the house and go do each morning.

What is your favorite exercise at class? My favorite exercise at class is anything with the resistance bands.

Any words of wisdom for other moms? I’m no expert, but my best “words of wisdom” would be to know that whenever you are in a rut or hard time with your kid(s) to just know that it won’t last forever. Also, make a point to get out of the house every day and do something. Even if it’s just going to the coffee drive through and getting a car wash. A change of scenery makes all the difference even on the hardest days.

What is your favorite piece of baby gear? My favorite piece of baby gear is probably our activity center. It’s like an exersaucer but converts to a table so we’ve been able to use it much longer! Isla loved playing in it when she was an infant and still loves playing with it as a toddler.

What are your 3 favorite things? My 3 favorite things are my family, coffee and bravo tv

If you could win a gold medal for one "mom" activity, what would it be for? My mom activity Olympic sport would be picking out bows to match any or Isla’s outfits.

What is something that might surprise us? Something that might surprise you is I was a kindergarten and first grade teacher before I became a mom! I plan on going back once our kids are in school

  • If you could turn a "mom" activity into an Olympic Sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for? Napping. My kids and I love to watch the Great British Baking Show in the afternoons and usually we all end up snuggled up on the couch napping.

5. Hannah Kunze teaches Stroller Strides in Poulsbo on Monday's and Stroller Barre on occasion! She is mama to 2 little girls.

  • If you were to create a slogan for your life, what would it be? “Bake with love, not hate!”
  • What item that you don’t have already, would you most like to own? My Masters? Does that count as an item? Problem is having the time / money and deciding between either Art Education or Art Therapy.
  • What workout gear can you not live without? That’s a two parter... my BOB Double Stroller: without somewhere to put my kids I’d never get my workout in and my Brooks Moving Comfort Adjustable Sports Bras: without being able to easily nurse I’d never make it through said workout.
  • If you could turn a "mom" activity into an Olympic Sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for? Not sure how to word this haha but “ripping off the bandaid”? I make it a point to deal with the complicated milestones (weaning from nursing, taking away the binky, potty training, etc.) while my hubby is away. I figure, embrace the suck! That way we can better enjoy the time we have together as a family.

Tell us about yourself and your family. My husband Andrew and I are parents to Olivia (12 months) and are expecting Baby #2 in June! Until Olivia was born I was a 1st grade teacher and this year I am working part time teaching 4th grade.

What surprised you the most once you became a mom? That I could survive on such little sleep!

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it? I went to my first class not really knowing what to expect but I needed to get a routine set and a reason to leave the house and it’s now a big part of my weekly routine. I’ve never before been in a workout routine this regular before and I really enjoy running now, which is something I never thought i would say. I also love the community it has made for both me and Olivia!

What would you tell someone thinking about joining? Definitely to give it a try! The workouts are great and the community is such an amazing bonus!

What is your favorite exercise at class? It’s hard to pick a specific exercise but Strides 360 as a whole class is my favorite.

Any words of wisdom for other moms? Not be afraid to ask someone else for help or advice. Someone else has always been where you are or is willing to lend a hand!

What is your favorite go to piece of baby/kid gear? My BOB stroller and my Lille Baby carrier.

What are your 3 favorite things? Coffee, Reading, and Quilting/Crafting

Favorite thing about the Holidays or month of December? I love everything Christmas! But really love decorating, family traditions and gatherings, and watching Hallmark movies with my sister.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us! In high school I used compete in Scottish Highland Dance.

73159922_599767827228430_7342606257368334336_n.jpg

Tell us about yourself and your family. My little family consists of myself, my husband Paul, and our little dude Rory (3 in February). We're trying for #2! Send me all that baby dust! We have 3 cats (Tucker, Tank, and Duke), and a sweet dog (Kona).

What surprised you the most once you became a mom? Honestly, the anxiety that everyone seems to have but no one really talks about! I had such morbid worries, and I was SURE I was the only mom ever... turns out I'm not and it's pretty widespread!

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it? I joined fit4mom because it was a LEGIT work out that I could bring my kid to. No #momguilt for leaving my baby to take care of my needs! That's still why I love it, that and the #tribevibe of being around other women who are JUST where I am, feeling/doing/living the same things I am. Plus the joy of watching Rory grow up with all these other amazing kiddos! He loves it just as much as me!

What would you tell someone thinking about joining? Don't think about it, just do it. You won't regret it!

What is your favorite exercise at class? Lunges. Ha!! That's kinda a joke. I hated lunges when I first started, mostly because I was always off balance and never sure of myself. I appreciate them now because I can see it as a proof of progress!

Any words of wisdom for other moms? You matter. Your needs matter. Just like on the airplane when they tell you to put your oxygen on first, you gotta take care of some of your needs first too. Don't wait until you're at your wits end, take a little bit of time every day, even if it's only 15 minutes to do something that is JUST for you. Stop judging yourself for NEEDING something beyond what your family can give you.

What is your favorite go to piece of baby/kid gear? I'm sold on Bogs. These boots are nearly indestructible and a definite must have for fall/winter/spring. Worth the investment!

What are your 3 favorite things?

1. Well written, smart romance novels.

2. Being at the Ocean.

3. Dinner and drinks with a girlfriend.

Favorite Thanksgiving food? IT IS SO HARD TO PICK JUST ONE. Today I say turkey dipped in gravy.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us! I toured Europe when I was 16 with a state select choir. I even sang in Notre Dame! It was magical and I've wanted to go back ever since!

CMP (3 of 1)-17.JPG

Tell us about you and your family.

I'm Kate, he's Patrick, and we're high school sweethearts. Together we have Rylan (4.5) Joslyn (2) and Whitton (4 months). Oh and we have an obnoxious cat called Bowen...We moved to Port Orchard in 2010 from the Seattle area when Patrick started working as a mechanical engineer at the shipyard. He now works at Bangor and I stay home to corral the children. We are both self-professed introverts and love a good movie night or lazy Saturday morning but but we also love getting out to make memories with our little clan.

What surprised you the most once you became a mom?

I was most surprised by how our (my and my husband's) parenting style differs from our parent's. I have had to defend so many things and I've even had to scold my mom for bad Grammy behaviors! "No they cant have lollipops for bedtime snacks! Come on mom!?"....Who knew?

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it?

I thought about joining a few years ago but my oldest was such a bad traveler that he kept me housebound more often than not. Fast forward another kid and I realized that I desperately needed mom-to-mom contact and some exercise-induced happy endorphins more than I needed peaceful car rides. So I when found out I was pregnant with #3 I got smart and went to my first Fit4Mom class. Instantly hooked!

What are you most looking forward to with becoming a FIT4MOM instructor? What is your WHY?

I'm looking forward to getting to know each of the mom's just a little bit better and being able to meet them wherever they're at in their motherhood and fitness journey. We learn so much from each other.

What is one of your current wellness goals?

My current goal is working on being mindful of "self" and taking the time to check in with my mind and body. I spend so much time taking care of and thinking about others that I often go through the motions when it comes to myself. Now it is time to stop, take a deep breath, listen to my body and let it tell me what comes next.

What would you tell someone thinking about joining?

Just do it. Are least give it a good try. Toss the kids in the car or strap on your belly support band and get yourself to a class already! The hardest part is just getting out of your own head and out the door! Ok the push ups are hard but not THAT hard.

Any words of wisdom for other moms?

Eat. All. The. Chocolate. Ok ok, Hallmark version. Snuggle your babies, quit the mom guilt, be proud of every day you make it through bedtime, eat ice cream and cry, take the picture, sing the songs, read ALL the books, wipe everything, smile when it feels right, nap whenever you can, be ok with saying no, and then, really, eat all the chocolate!

What is your favorite go to piece of baby/kid gear?

Baby carrier. Hands down. Or up for that matter. Being hands free plus the added bonus of baby snuggles and sleepy dust is a mom win all around.

What are your 3 favorite things?

I'm sure my favorites change all the time but today I'll choose.....stormy nights, that weeping/wheezing laugh that happens when you find something WAY funnier than it should be and a good historical romance novel.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us!

I eat an apple every day annnnnd I have a weird obsession with all things Gaelic. (Irish/Scottish).....Side note. My auto correct changed Gaelic to garlic and I almost had one of those aforementioned laughing fits. Ha! I crack myself up.

Tell us about yourself and your family.

I’m mom to two silly and amazing kids, Vincent and Madeline, ages 5 and 3.

What surprised you the most once you became a mom?

That my son could pee across the entire bathroom while sitting on the potty!

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it?

I had heard of FIT4MOM for a few years from friends in multiple places we’ve lived. About a year and a half ago, I bought a free month of classes at a charity auction when a local friend kept telling me to come try a class. I thought I would test it out for a month and just see what happened. From the first class I knew this was something I didn’t realize I was missing from my life, but definitely needed to be a part of. The village of moms is such an amazing support system. Being able to find workouts that fit into my schedule, with my kids at my side is exciting enough, but the community is the real reason I regret not joining sooner.

You attend to of our programs. What do you love about Body Back and what do you love about Stroller Strides?

I love the community of women I’ve found in both programs. Stroller Strides is great for getting out of the house, other adults to talk to, friend time for the little ones and to make sure I’m getting my body moving regularly. It was a great way for me to get back to taking care of myself after focusing on the kids first for so many years.

The women I’ve participated in Body Back with are so inspirational for me. Taking time for yourself is hard as a mom, but I’ve realized how important it really is. Surrounding myself with other women who push themselves to be stronger at every class has helped me to become stronger than I ever though I could be. Physically I’m stronger now in my 30’s after have 2 c-sections than I was in my 20’s.

What would you tell someone thinking about joining?

Don’t be afraid to come try a class, no matter what age your kids are. Whatever reason might hold you back: If you think your baby won’t stay calm, or your toddler won’t sit still, or your preschooler will be bored… You aren’t the only one and there are other mommas in all stage of life and motherhood right there beside you.

Any words of wisdom for other moms?

When your life seems busy or overwhelming, make sure to schedule in the fun times too. Whether it's a big adventure, popcorn and a movie on the couch, or just a walk around the block. your kids and YOU need fun in your life.

What is your favorite go to piece of baby/kid gear?

With busy elementary and preschool kids, snack and lunchboxes are our go to items right now. We love the LunchBots line of stainless steel bento boxes.

What are your 3 favorite things?

Coffee, wine and books.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us!

I speak French and lived in Paris for two summers.

Tell us about yourself and your family.

My name is Jessica Tautfest and I’m Mexican-American. I come from a small border town in Southern California that is known for the highest illiteracy rate and unemployment rate in the country. What my hometown lacks in glamour, it makes up in the power of community. Family is everything and everyone is willing to help out their neighbor. My husband is in the Navy and that is what led us here to the Pacific Northwest. We’ve been married for almost 5 years and have been together almost 10 years. Our only kids (for now) are two fur babies, an American Eskimo and a Pug. They definitely believe they are people too.

You're a working mom, tell us about your profession, what do you love about your job?

My passion has always been to help others and this ultimately lead me to teaching. What I love most about teaching is the confidence I see in students when they finally achieve a skill or master a topic. Changing their mindset about what they can do is very rewarding.

Why did you join FIT4MOM Kitsap’s FIT4BABY class? Why do you love it?

Before getting pregnant I had worked hard to lose around 20 lbs. I knew I wanted to keep in shape and be healthy during my pregnancy so I joined FIT4MOM Kitsap’s FIT4BABY class. I love it because it allowed me to interact with other moms who understand what I’m going through while getting an awesome workout!

What would you tell someone thinking about joining?

What I would tell someone thinking about joining is go for it! It’s hard to make yourself accountable (even when you aren’t pregnant) and this class helps!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? If you didn’t have any obstacles, what dream would you pursue?

In 5 years I see myself teaching full time and taking care of my family. I don’t intend to have a second child but am open to more fur babies. If I didn’t have any obstacles my dream would be to teach at the college level.

What is your favorite pregnancy related purchase?

A pregnancy purchase that I have a love-hate relationship with is my C-shaped body pillow. Sometimes it feels like a cloud and helps to soothe my aching self to sleep. Other times I find myself fighting it off in the night.

What are you looking forward to with baby?

What I am looking forward to most with my little boy is starting new and continuing old traditions for all of the upcoming holidays.

Any words of wisdom for expecting mamas?

Some words of wisdom for expecting mamas is take all the advice people are willing to give you knowing they are only trying to be helpful. Everyone has a different pregnancy so not everything is going to happen the way you expect and that’ll be okay.

What have you been craving? Or any aversions?

I haven’t had any strong enough or consistent enough craving to narrow it down but my aversion has been roast beef. Very specific but I can’t even stand the thought of it!

What are your 3 favorite things.

My three favorite things are my family: Tony, Shenzi, and Puggy.

Tell us something that might surprise us!

I don’t know how to snap my fingers or whistle.

Fam.JPG

Tell us about yourself and your family.

I am a passionate, determined, hardworking individual who loves laughing, playing and having deep conversation with family and friends. Our family is organized chaos! We love dance parties, singing at the top of our lungs, working outside together, exploring the outdoors and being silly. My husband and I say “I love you” to those kids like it’s going out of style.

You're a working mom, tell us about your profession? What do you love about your job?

I am a co-founder and the Director of Aftercare at Scarlet Road. Scarlet Road exists to meet the needs of those who have been sexually exploited or trafficked who reside in Kitsap and Mason county. We work to intervene and educate to prevent victimization, we provide solutions and resources to exit the industry safely, and we journey alongside survivors to find full healing.

There are many things I love about my job, but one of the coolest experiences is when you see someone really “get it”—when the lightbulb turns on for them. When they realize that what happened to them was wrong and that they have value and it isn’t just based on what someone can take from their body. It’s having those moments when someone realizes how EXTRAORDINARY they are to have survived their past and are here to encourage other survivors on toward hope and freedom!

What surprised you the most one you became a mom?

How much I actually love it. I’ve never been one of those people who went crazy over kids or babies, but when I had my first—I immediately fell in love and something inside of me changed. It’s truly one of the best things that ever happened to me. Even though there are so many hard moments and days, I truly love this job.

Why did you join FIT4MOM Kitsap? Why do you love it?

I joined after a friend mentioned the group and I was looking for something to do one morning with the kids. I tried it out and was SO impressed with how good of a workout it was. Not only was it a great workout, but I could have my kids with me, I could get to know other moms and grow in a community of people who seem to really care about each other. There are also opportunities for community to be built between our kids and our partners which is really beautiful.

What would you tell someone thinking about joining?

Do it already! FIT4MOM offers accountability in getting back in shape/feeling good about your body after childbirth, a killer mom community, and buddies for your kids to play with. There are really no draw backs.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? If you didnt have any obstacles, what dream would you pursue?

· There are really a couple options here.

  • Continuing to build a program that serves survivors of trafficking and exploitation in our community well. (having no additional kids)
  • Having one or two more kids and putting my energy into that full time
  • Traveling the world/moving to a different country and doing anti-trafficking work
  • But my favorite and least realistic—somehow getting paid to eat, be with the people I love, and see beautiful places.

What is your favorite go to piece of baby/kid gear?

Wipes. I know it’s boring, but I really don’t know what I’d do without them

Any words of wisdom for other moms?

Some moments and days aren’t awesome, but remember that you can always ask your kids/partner for a re-start or do-over no matter how far you are into the day. Offer yourself the same kind of grace you offer to your children—be extravagant. You are doing a FABULOUS job.

What are your 3 favorite things.

Eating, adventuring, and being in slightly sketchy situations

Tell us something that might surprise us!

I’ve lived in Canada, Spain and India

Tell us about yourself and your family.

I'm Stephanie, I've been married to my husband for going on 7 years, but been together for a total of 13 years. We have 2 littles, Juliana (4) and Noah (8 months). We both are native from Los Angeles, California and moved to Washington when my husband got stationed here almost 6 years ago.

What surprised you the most once you became a mom?

I think what surprised me the most is that I've totally become the overprotective mama bear and helicopter mom! Lol

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it?

I joined fit4mom because I wanted to get back into shape and re-ignite my love for fitness again.....I had put my health and fitness in the back burner since becoming a mom and finally felt like I was at a place where I wanted to and was able to carve out time especially for me and my health so I could be a more confident and happier version of myself for my family.

You are our first mom to go through all of our programs, from FIT4BABY to Stroller Strides to Body Back. What is one thing you loved about each class?

1 commonality of all 3 programs that I enjoyed the most was the connection with other mamas to be/moms, we were/are all on similar journeys to motherhood going through very similar trials and tribulations, I enjoyed the interaction and connection while focusing on being more healthy and working out and also the events associated around the fit4mom community.

Fit4baby specifically I enjoyed relaxing at the end of class with the words of wisdom/mantra that always focused on connecting with baby, it was nice to stop and be in the moment of being pregnant since my days and weeks during pregnancy seemed like a blur and flew by.

Stroller Strides I loved loved loved having a special time to workout while having Noah with me, incorporating him into the workouts singing to him and tickling him, seeing him laugh at me and smile while I jumped around in front of him lol.

Body back has been an awesome experience to spend an hour with amazing mamas who kick butt each and every workout. Who not only support you but motivate you to push harder in the workout. Love my BB posse!

What would you tell someone thinking about joining?

I tell ALL the mommas I know. Just try it out! Do it! It's free to try out and I Promise you wont regret it! Even if your dying the first time because it's been a while since you've worked out it's such a positive atmosphere, theres no judgement and you'll feel great that you did!

Any words of wisdom for other moms?

Accept help when its offered, you can still be super mom but can get help from family/friends. Mommas need breaks too physically and mentally from time to time so we are our best version of ourselves for our family.

It’s that time of year again when we move our Stroller Strides, Stroller Barre and Body Back classes outside to our local parks. It’s also the time of year that we start spending more time outside in our yards, with our kids at parks and enjoying the sunshine. Spring is here! As we move outside we want to remind everyone to make sure they are properly protecting their skin. When was the last time you bought new sunscreen? You should be checking it to make sure it’s not expired. What about a hat for yourself? Are YOU, mama protecting your skin? It’s so easy to forget about ourselves when we are busy making sure our babies and kids have sunscreen and their skin is covered. That was me, and this is me now. Just recently having a 1 cm radius of skin removed from neck, because of a mole that came back positive for melanoma.

So, lets talk about this. Are you taking care of your skin? When was the last time you did a body check to look over your moles? Do you have a mole that doesn’t look right? NOW, is the time to go in and get it looked at. Yes, they might remove it right there in the doctors office like me or they might monitor it. You know your body best and if something is not right or feels off, it’s time to get yourself checked.

I want to start this with sharing a picture of me from our grand opening of our Bremerton Stroller Strides classes in August of 2018. Look how dark that mole is. It’s very noticeable on my neck. Though, a lot of my clothes friends said they never noticed the mole before. That mole grew with every pregnancy (3), so I just figured it was growing because of the change in hormones, however, some time last year it changed to melanoma. I remember in the fall thinking “I should probably get this looked at.” But life is busy, moms are busy and there was no time to get it looked. When I saw a new primary care provider back in January, that was the first thing he noticed. My referral went in and 2 ½ months later, I finally had that appointment to get it looked at. Sitting in the doctors office waiting for it to be removed. I was freaked out. More freaked out about having a needle in neck and cutting a hole in my neck. What was even more scary was the phone call saying pathology came back positive for melanoma and they will be removing a 1 cm radius of skin from around that area. What’s happening? How did I get here? Talking to a few moms about this giant wound on my neck, they said they to have had melanoma spots removed from their skin. It’s really scary at first to hear this, but it is something we shouldn’t take lightly. The day after I had the remaining skin removed from my neck, I was able to take off my bandage. When I removed my bandage I saw a 4 inch long steristrip covering my stitches. When I was imagining a 1 cm radius of skin, I was thinking a little bigger than a quarter, not 4 inches. I am very thankful that the second round send to pathology came back clear and there is a 99% chance that melanoma won’t come back in this area. However, I’m very fair skinned, with lots of freckles and moles, so getting my skin checked is going to be a priority of mine. Just like going in for a yearly physical.

There are 3 main types of skin cancer. The form of skin cancer that I had is melanoma. Probably the most recognized by name but it is not the most common form of skin cancer. While mine was caught in the early stages, I do wonder how long I would have put off getting that mole checked if it weren’t for a doctor being concerned about it. There were more than 178, 500 cases of melanoma is 2018. If melanoma is caught early, it is almost always curable but if not, it can spread to other parts of the body. Here are the warning signs (ABCDE) of Melanoma from the Skin Cancer Foundation.

A-Asymmetry

If you draw a line through the middle, the two sides will match, meaning it is symmetrical. If you draw a line through the mole and the two halves will not match, meaning it is asymmetrical, a warning sign for melanoma.

B-Border

A benign mole has smooth, even borders, unlike melanomas. The borders of an early melanoma tend to be uneven. The edges may be scalloped or notched.

C-Color

Most benign moles are all one color — often a single shade of brown. Having a variety of colors is another warning signal. A number of different shades of brown, tan or black could appear. A melanoma may also become red, white or blue.

D-Diameter

Benign moles usually have a smaller diameter than malignant ones. Melanomas usually are larger in diameter than the eraser on your pencil tip (¼ inch or 6mm), but they may sometimes be smaller when first detected.

E-Evolving

Common, benign moles look the same over time. Be on the alert when a mole starts to evolve or change in any way. When a mole is evolving, see a doctor. Any change — in size, shape, color, elevation, or another trait, or any new symptom such as bleeding, itching or crusting — points to danger.

Now that I look back on my story, I notice a few things from the ABCDE’s. Evolving stands out the most to me. It was evolving and I chalked it up as maybe it’s something I shouldn’t be concerned about. My mole was slightly asymmetrical, but not by much. Under a microscope it did have one area without a smooth border, but it was hard for me tell. The color was dark, but with darker eyes and hair, my moles can be darker naturally. Diameter, my mole was larger than a pencil eraser. I could have easily scheduled a dermatology appointment back in the fall when I first had the feeling that something was wrong, but I didn’t and looking back if I knew more about the ABCDE’s of melanoma, I probably would have gone in sooner.

Since having my surgery to have the remaining skin removed from neck, I’ve talked taking more precautions with my skin. I bought a few more hats (Thanks FIT4MOM for releasing some cute new ones!) to wear while I’m classes or attending classes. I’ve purchased new sunscreen recently which I usually do every season. We are working with 2 really awesome sunscreen companies on providing sunscreen for our upcoming Mother’s Day Celebration and Father’s Day Celebration! Plus keeping my skin covered. I do need to keep my scar away from the sun for a little while to let it finish healing. But it’s time to create a new normal in my life by always applying sunscreen when I am outside and cannot be covered and wearing hats more to protect my face. This is also just a gentle reminder that WE know our bodies best. It doesn’t matter if it’s needing your moles checked, scheduling your yearly physical or even going to the dentist. It’s so important to take the time to schedule those appointments and go to them.

Tell us about yourself and your family. I'm mom to William (4) and Harrison (1). Married to a submariner.

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Kitsap? I was originally born in Bakersfield, California but my family moved when I was 4 to Saudi Arabia. We lived overseas in Saudi, Indonesia and Kuwait until I started college at UC Santa Cruz. I first moved to Poulsbo in 2012, moved to Connecticut, then back to Poulsbo in 2017.

Share a favorite mom moment. This is a tough one! Probably seeing my older son "read" books to his little brother.

Any words of wisdom for other moms? Not really! I'm right there with you learning as I go.

What are your 3 favorite things? Sailing, the beach and my family.

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it? I joined Fit4Mom because I wanted a way to workout without having to find childcare for my baby. There was no gym childcare where I was living at the time until babies were 6 months old. I thought I would just do stroller strides until William was old enough to go to the gym childcare but ended up liking the workouts and companionship so much I never left. It was also great for William because he got to spend time with a great group of kids his age. We both made friends, a win win!

What would you tell someone thinking about joining? Do it! I wished I had found Fit4Mom sooner.

What is the BEST thing about being an instructor? Getting to share my love of fitness and stroller strides with other moms. I also love seeing moms making new friends in class.

What is one of your current wellness goals? Surviving my husbands sea tour?? Ha! Also setting time aside for myself.

Favorite Exercise. It's a tie between deadlifts and a plank 4-point touch.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us! I have a graduate certificate in Scientific Illustration and a BS in Environmental Geology. I once spent 10 weeks at sea on the scientific drilling ship, JOIDES Resolution, as their onboard science illustrator.

I met my husband in Japan while I was teaching on Yokosuka Naval Base and he was working on the Reagan TDY for 5 months. We met 2 months into my 2.5 year contract. Long distance between two countries was pretty difficult and I logged a ton of flying time for visits but it was well worth it. We got married in Vegas in December 2017 and welcomed our daughter in Japan in March 2018. She will be 1 this month...how did that year go so fast?? We moved back to Washington in June.

What surprised you the most once you became a mom?

After being a teacher for 13 years, I thought my patience was all but gone. Willa rejuvenated it and now I’m more patient than I have been in a very long time!

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it? Both Body Back and Stroller Strides/Barre.

I joined FIT4MOM because my wonderful friend Chelsea knew I was struggling with being a first time mom, moving to a new state with no family or friends and being uncomfortable with my baby weight. Stroller Strides got me out of the house, allowed me to vent and socialize with other women. I needed an outlet and Stroller Strides and Barre absolutely provided that. How amazing that I could bring Willa with me and still get a great workout! Then I found Body Back and oh man, did it challenge me! One hour of intense training...baby free. The best part of the classes is that you give what you can. You can level up any of the exercises depending on how you feel that day. The instructors support you throughout every class and become part of your journey.

What would you tell someone thinking about joining?

Tie your shoes, pack the snacks and get here. You won’t regret it! The first step is showing up :)

Any words of wisdom for other moms?

Ask for help if you need it. There is always someone who is willing to give advice, help or a hug.

What is your favorite go to piece of baby/kid gear?

Lately it has been Veggie Straws, they are the cure for everything...does that count? Also, any toy that makes noise has been effective at keeping Willa entertained.

What are your 3 favorite things?

  1. Traveling
  2. Hiking
  3. Family time

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us!

I wanted to be a detective when I grew up...I still do! I devour military mystery books and think I would look pretty cool with a badge.

Tell us about yourself and your family.

Hi! My name is Arla, and I've been married to my husband Garrett going on four years. We have a gorgeous three month old named Hendrix and we live in a log cabin apartment in Belfair with our Scottish terrier dachshund Sasha. Garrett is a special needs teacher and I'm a writer.

What surprised you the most once you became a mom?

That the mental adjustment, i.e. thinking of yourself as a mom, would be so hard. Someone told me that she thinks being a new mom in your late 20s and 30s brings with it the challenge of adjusting your identity to all of a sudden fit in a new identity (as opposed to perhaps taking it more in stride as a young mom, though that of course can have its own challenges). I think this is so true. I didn't think I would mourn so much of what I've "lost" since I was so excited and ready for this next chapter.

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it? What would you tell someone thinking about joining?

I joined because I kept seeing Kendra, who I knew from college, post about fit4baby, and I was pregnant, lol. After having Hendrix, it was appealing to have workout classes I could do without having to find child care, since exercise has long been a priority of mine. I would tell someone thinking about joining that everyone is really nice and you're bound to meet interesting new people.

What is your current job? Or what did you do before staying at home (if you don’t currently work outside the home)?

I write for the Kitsap Sun primarily. I'm a self employed writer who works from home, so while the bulk of my work is my regular contract with the Sun, covering Mason County and some Kitsap issues (adding real estate and county government to my beat this year because I can't say no), I also do blogging and social media work for the Seattle company Modern-Shed, and occasionally work for other entities as the opportunities arise. But the Sun and Modern-Shed keeps me so busy I usually turn down other work.

Any words of wisdom for other moms?

Find as much support as possible, and if you feel alone, talk it out with any one at Stroller Strides!

What is your favorite go to piece of baby/kid gear?

Hmm. I honestly love our changing table. I think because it's organized, ha.

What are your 3 favorite things?

Besides my family? Hmm. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Reading. The ocean.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us!

I'm a published poet and creative nonfiction writer. Unfortunately, these things will have to fall on the back burner for a minute as I get back in the groove of working while caring for Hendrix.

Tell us about yourself and your family.

My name is Hannah, my husband is Benjamin and our daughter is Lillian (2 years old). My husband and I are both originally from Ohio. We met when we were paired as chemistry partners our sophomore year of high school and well, the rest is “history”. We enjoy our life as a military family. We are expecting the newest addition to our family in August.

What surprised you the most once you became a mom?

I’ve spent my entire adult life working with children, I’ve recorded many mental notes within that time. I spent the immediate six years prior to motherhood as a manager for Navy Child and Youth Programs. None of that prepared me for the daily roller coaster of exhaustion and love experienced when parenting.

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it?

We moved to Kitsap in June, after spending many years living in Spain. We had never been to the PNW and knew we’d be experiencing a bit of culture shock in our transition. I joined Fit4Mom right away hoping to find a network of mothers to distract me from the chaos of my reality. I was pleasantly surprised to find much more than I expected. They say it takes a village and this is a village unlike any other I’ve seen.

Why did you decide to become an instructor?

I decided to become an instructor to be part of this movement of motherhood. There was nothing like this offered to me while overseas so I was astonished at how natural Fit4Mom makes the connections feel. I knew that I wanted to have a larger role in our village and help to welcome others.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? If you didn't have any obstacles, what dream would you pursue?

While I am currently committed to full time motherhood, I do hope to focus again on my career sometime after our littles have gone to school. I worked long and hard to get where I was and truly enjoyed my work with military youth. I would love to help bring the Fit4Mom community to more overseas military installations as well.

What is your favorite go to piece of baby/kid gear?

Although I don’t use it as much now, I don’t think I could have survived my first year of motherhood without my Tula. It become a part of me, an extra limb. It didn’t look bad on my husband either.

Any advice for new moms? What about advice for veteran moms?

Live in the moment. Everyone's parenting journey is their own, while advice is great, don’t lose sleep trying to do things like everyone else. You are your little’s only Mother. Own it, embrace it, enjoy it!

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us!

Although I’ve practically been a military spouse since graduating. I have a Bachelors of Fine Arts and majored in 3D animation. I dreamt of working for Pixar someday and am a huge Disney fan (let’s be honest, Disney nerd).

Tell us about yourself and your family.

I am married to Ryan and we have a daughter, Hannah, who is 14-months old. We live in Bremerton in the Illahee neighborhood.

You're a working mom, tell us about your profession, what you love about your job!

I am a nurse on the medical-neurology unit at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma. I love the diversity of the day-to-day work as each shift is different depending on my patients. I also appreciate the versatility within nursing because I can work in many roles and follow a non-traditional work schedule. I was a full-time nurse educator but I decided to reduce my hours after having Hannah. I am lucky to have that flexibility.

What surprised you the most once you became a mom?

I am surprised at my "mommy" sixth sense. It is amazing how in-tune you are to your baby's needs. From a neurological perspective, the brain changes so much during pregnancy and postpartum, which I find fascinating!

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it?

l joined Fit4Mom as I really needed an opportunity to connect to other moms and to get a good workout. Exercise is a big stress-release for me so Fit4Mom helps with my sanity as well as gives me a safe place to express my woes/joys/concerns/etc. This mom-community is so open and supporting, whether your child is screaming bloody murder during class or you need any advice on anything related to motherhood.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? If you didn't have any obstacles, what dream would you pursue?

This question made me think! I hope to have another child in the next 5 years. It would be such an accomplishment if I could run a marathon in that time-frame. If I didn't have any obstacles, I would hike the entire Pacific Crest Trail.

What is your favorite go to piece of baby/kid gear?

My family loves to hike so we have used our backpack carrier for many miles. I would recommend any sort of baby carrying gear from wraps to more structured carriers.

Any advice for new moms? What about advice for veteran moms?

For new moms: Don't feel ashamed to ask for help if you are struggling with changes associated with motherhood. And please listen to the old adage, "Sleep when the baby sleeps."

For veteran moms: Don't compare kids as each child is unique in personality and stages of development.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us!

I have a second degree in Spanish. I really enjoy reading bi-lingual books to Hannah.

Tell us about yourself and your family.

I'm born and raised in Texas. My husband and I met in high school and we dated on and off for 4 years. We got married a year after he joined the Navy. We decided to start trying for kids on our 3 year wedding anniversary and I got pregnant immediately! I love the life we have and I'm really glad the navy brought us out here. It's so cool to experience things so much different than where we grew up.

You're a working mom, tell us about your profession, what you love about your job!

I'm a Vet Tech. I work at an emergency hospital. I primarily work in surgery though with our Primary care doctors. So I see a ton of spays and neuters. I love getting to help animals out. And cuddling the cuties as well. Its stressful but tons of fun!

What surprised you the most once you became a mom?

I thought I would be more independent from my child because I'm a really independent wife. Turns out I'm kinda needy. I love spending time with him. It took me almost a year after having him to start working out again because I never wanted to leave him. First kid problems right?

Why did you join FIT4MOM'S Body Back program? Why do you love it?

I used to work out all the time before having my son. I was really in shape. I also needed to get away from the house and do something for myself. I love the group workouts and how positive everyone is. It's really motivating and just a great time to focus on me.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? If you didn't have any obstacles, what dream would you pursue?

I want to become a licensed vet tech. I'm working on schooling right now but have fallen behind a little due to us selling our house a few months back. It was a stressful time. I also would like to have another kid and hopefully move closer to the south. If the navy let's us. Having family so far away is very difficult.

What is your favorite go to piece of baby/kid gear?

My diaper bag, which I recently bought a back pack. Why did I ever use a purse? It's so much easier to carry and seems to fit more stuff. I always feel prepared.

Any advice for new moms? What about advice for veteran moms?

For new moms, it's to not let the internet or social media ruin parenting for you. There are so many negative people online and anyone can make you feel inferior as a parent.

For just moms in general take more time for yourself.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us!

I love watching those Dr. Pimple popper videos on YouTube. They are so gross but also so satisfying. She recently got a show on TLC I believe. So I'm obviously not the only one who enjoys it!

Tell us about yourself and your family

My name is Lori, my husband is Jon and our son is Will. My husband and I are both originally from Michigan. We met in high school, but we aren’t high school sweet hearts! We didn’t start dating until college. Ended up dating for 5 years before getting engaged for 2 more. We made it official August 2013 and we’ve been married for 5 years now! My husband is part of the Naval Submarine program. We were first stationed in South Carolina for his nuclear training and then had a brief relocation to Connecticut where he qualified to become a welder. We then made a cross country trip to Washington in 2016 to his current command. Just as we got here, we found out we were expecting. Our son, Will is a Pacific Northwest baby and proud of it! He loves all things nature, and Seahawks football!

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it?

I mean, this is something we all want. We want something to get us out of the house after we’ve been cooped up for six months or so with a new baby. My main reason for joining was because my husband was going to be deployed a lot this coming year. We needed something for both Will and I to occupy our time, and make sure that we had some good company while he was away. I had seen a post from the lovely Hannah Kelly on one of the Facebook military spouses pages. The description read that you could work out and spend time with your kiddos at the same time. Sounded like a perfect match! Fun fact: I made my husband come with me and hang out at the mall because I needed moral support on my first day.

I love it because it’s become more than just a workout group for us. Will gets to spend time around other kids (even though he runs off frequently) and gets to participate in some fun group activities. It’s become part of our daily routine, and I’ve met some amazing women along the way.

What surprised you the most once you became a mom?

What surprised me the most? How resilient my mind and body could be. After everything you’ve already experienced to get your baby here, your body is being pushed to function and process on limited hours of sleep. Your mind is constantly being tested by overexuberant amounts of patience. As time passes, I’ve learned to become more laid-back but adapted this “scheduled chaos“ mantra. But even then, once you think you’ve got it down, it all changes.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Maybe another little Kromer. Probably moving again. Hopefully, settling down into a more permanent housing situation. Going back to school for visual arts/animation. Training for another running race! Maybe a marathon?

If you didn't have any obstacles, what dream would you pursue?

There’s so many things to do, I can’t think of them all. We’ll start with becoming a concept artist/animator for Disney or a video game company. I’d love to travel more and be part of panels at conventions, see how excited people are about what I’ve helped to create, sight-see with my family while I’m at locations, and eat lots of delicious food!

What is your favorite go to piece of baby/kid gear?

I’m not a spokesperson, I promise, but I love my B.O.B stroller. My Mom got it for me after hearing from her dentist that we NEEDED one of these. Since I like to run and go on trails, she thought it’d be perfect for us. I always joked that Will had a better ride than we did. Also, our Osprey carrier! Will loves going for hikes and backpacking on my back. We’ve had some pretty great adventures together!

Any advice for new moms? What about advice for veteran moms?

I would say, don’t let social media give you this “perfect” perception on how your kids should be raised. Every situation is different. When in doubt, call your Momma or ask your closest women in your village.

BREATHE. Then drink some coffee [or whatever you fancy.]

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us!Not sure if many people know this, but even though I hail from Michigan, I was actually adopted from Guatemala.

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it? I joined FIT4MOM because I was looking for a way to get active again and I was looking for a way to get out of the house and interact with adults again. I love it because it is a great group of moms who “get it” and they support each other without judgement.

Tell us about yourself and your family. I’m Elisabeth (Lis), my husband is Hans and our son is Oskar. I am originally from northern California and my husband is from Sweden, and moved to Poulsbo when he was 16. Our son is a dual Swedish/American citizen. My husband and I met in 2006 in Poulsbo at a Poker League, we dated for 2 years and then went our separate ways and I moved overseas for 10 years and we reconnected in 2016. We started dating again long distance while I lived in China and then I moved back to the US to try out a relationship with us on the same continent. I moved back to the US in August, we got engaged in September, found out we were pregnant in March and got married in July and had our son in November. Our son was born November 1st and has and continues to be the biggest blessing of our life. Oskar was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis (NF) type 1, when he was 3 months old. NF is a genetic neurologic disorder that can cause tumors, bone abnormalities, learning disabilities along with other potential medical complications.

What surprised you the most once you became a mom? Oh….just one….?? - How much I could love someone. - How I could function on so little sleep. - How I went from a sound sleeper to waking up at the sound of a wimper.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 5 years I hope to have another kiddo, to have purchased a house and be doing more youth/volunteer work.

If you didn't have any obstacles, what dream would you pursue? I would take my family and travel the world.

What is your favorite go to piece of baby/kid gear? Braun No Touch Thermometer as a new mom I was always worried he was getting sick. Summer Infant Pop N’ Sit chair because I can take it with me anywhere. LillieBaby Carrier because we are a travel family and it makes airport life easier.

Any advice for new moms? What about advice for veteran moms? New moms – Enjoy it and love on them every chance you get. Veteran moms – Don’t worry about getting all the “stuff” done, enjoy your kiddos.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us! I have lived in 10 countries and traveled to 54 countries in the last 12 years.
